Irish Author Publishes Book on The New World of Work
‘The Manager’s Handbook for a New World of Work’ by Monica Murphy is the first book of its type by an Irish Author to capture a range of topics that are critical to successful management in a hybrid, remote working and more flexible world. Murphy says : “I started writing the book during the first lockdown when I wasn’t on the road as much as I used to be – it was a lot of early mornings from 5:30am to 7am, because my twin daughters usually get up around then”. Murphy established a business in 2011, leaving a full time job to do so and recalls that it was always something she had wanted to do and just had to go for it. Now, 11 years on, her training, coaching and people-skills company, MONERE Development Services (www.moneredevelopmentservices.com) employs 8 people headquartered in Cappoquin, Co.Waterford and provides online and in-person services to hundreds of clients across technology, fintech, retail, construction and the pharma industries.
“I felt that managers were often the ones most under pressure in many organisations” says Murphy, “they are getting pressure from the senior leaders to get the objectives achieved and they are getting a different type of pressure from the front-line employees who are expected to carry out the work”. Over the 11 years, Murphy and her team have distilled a huge number of useful activities, reflections, questions and content which is available through their digital platform, The Learning Vault. “I wanted to get the best of this content into a book, actually a workbook that can be scribbled and doodled on” she says, recalling that as an avid reader herself, she often wishes there was more writing or reflection space on books. She notes “there is a huge amount of American content on Leadership & Management, a lot of which is very good, that said, it doesn’t always land with an Irish reader” .
About the Book
Covid-19 has changed so much of how we do business. Working from home or some other remote location as distinct from a physical office space has become the norm. This has required some specific skills of people in operational, management and leadership roles.
